I was raised in a tough older Italian city north of Boston, Ma. where you were judged on your ability to handle yourself in the streets!
Friendships and teamwork were highly valued and loyalty to each other was an important factor.
Physical toughness was necessary, but more than that was a requirement to exhibit mental strength.
Fights were frequent and more street smarts were required. Back then, martial arts schools were pretty much unheard of and kids were taught by their dads. My Dad and Grandfather both were boxers and fighters and I credit them both for helping me to stay alive lol!
In high school I fell in love with football and that became my new focus for training on giving hits and taking hits!
After high school I became best friends with a co-worker of mine named Bill Johnson and we set out on a journey to become better fighters. So when we were not practicing on each other during breaks at work, we attended a martial arts demo the next city over.
We were shocked to see how this black belt in karate could use body dynamics so efficiently as to dominate his attackers with ease. We were also impressed as to his demo in which he broke a board while it is was on fire which somehow caused his own hair to catch on fire!
So next thing you know we enrolled in a class and that began my official martial arts journey with numerous nationally known Black Belted warriors and schools.
I have trained in numerous styles, but Taekwondo became my favorite. Along with Bill (who is now an 8th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo as well), we discovered the self control and self discipline that comes along with the training. At first, we did not want to be involved in the mental aspect; all we wanted to do was fight! But then we realized that the old adage that peace comes with strength was truly beneficial and carried over to our personal lives,
I will always credit my life in the arts as the reason I have a better life and that is what I wish to help others achieve through these same benefits that I acquired through training in the martial arts way.
My instructors are all experienced and certified martial artists with a passion for teaching. They will provide you with individualized attention and guidance, helping you to achieve your goals and reach your full potential. With their encouragement and support, you will gain confidence and self-discipline both on and off the mat.
As a kid, I ran the neighborhood with a pack of boys that would ignore you if you whined, complained or cried! They never looked down on me because I was a girl and expected me to keep up with the rest.
We did have one bully however who loved to target me. At the time, my skills were minimal, so my Navy dad rather than interceding for me on my behalf, tried to teach me the finer points of boxing. I wasn't a very good student however, and as result the bully always won! So when he came into my zone, my go-to self defense technique was to run!
Around that time, I learned about karate and how it could use fancy body moves to triumph over any attacker! Wow. That was for me. But because I could not talk my parents into finding a school for me, I bought a book.
Studying hard, I decided to teach the other kids in my neighborhood, not so much cause I wanted the best for them, but really cause I wanted to practice on them!
It was fun and surprisingly I was able to use some of techniques to defend myself against the bully and others,
High school came along and I became involved in gymnastics, track and even a crazy demo team that performed at games that required high kicks and fancy footwork; my first taste of fitness kickboxing lol.
Some years passed and I gravitated to Yoga and the physical requirements appealed to me. I then became an instructor out of a local church. When I became discouraged with the religious aspect of Yoga, I abandoned it.
Then fitness kickboxing became my go-to. Loved it and loved Billy Blanks and became an instructor as well.
But the appeal of the traditional martial arts way, along with the cool looking white uniforms grabbed me.
I just had to learn. And I did.
I credit my husband with all of my knowledge that came along with my martial arts journey and my desire to experience all that I could. And now I have been awarded 7th Degree Black Belt through my many years of bumps and bruises and joy.
It is my hope to pass along all that I have learned to others and to make the universe a better place.
